Bariatric operations for management of obesity


Candidates for a bariatric surgical procedure include
  ● Adults with a BMI 40 kg/m2 without comorbid illness 

  ● Adults with a BMI 35.0 to 39.9 kg/m2 with at least one serious comorbidity, including but not limited to:
      Type 2 diabetes [47,48]
      Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
      Hypertension
      Hyperlipidemia
      Obesity-hypoventilation syndrome (OHS)
      Pickwickian syndrome (combination of OSA and OHS)
      Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
      Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
      Pseudotumor cerebri
      Gastroesophageal reflux disease
      Asthma
      Venous stasis disease
      Severe urinary incontinence
      Debilitating arthritis
      Impaired quality of life
      Disqualification from other surgeries as a result of obesity 
       (ie, surgeries for osteoarthritic disease, ventral hernias, or stress incontinence)

   ● Adults with BMI between 30.0 to 34.9 kg/m2 AND one of the following comorbid conditions, 
       although there is no long-term evidence of benefit to support routinely performing a bariatric operation.
     •Uncontrollable type 2 diabetes
     Metabolic syndrome
