Immunizations and gout flare risk (December 2019)
Various factors, sometimes acting in combination, may provoke gout flares. Among these are conditions that may increase the proinflammatory activities of cells interacting with monosodium urate crystal deposits. A recent study showed that immunizations may be one such trigger. In this study, involving over 500 patients with established gout, immunization was associated with twofold higher odds of a gout flare within the ensuing 48 hours compared with periods when a vaccine was not administered. However, other observations suggest that gout flares are still infrequent in absolute terms following immunizations, and these findings require further confirmation.
